The Step Up Step Down Facility in Gladstone provides a valuable service which allows people needing to transition from hospital or retreat from the community to a homelike place where they can be supported and gain skills that will help them return home successfully. Paynters completed the final stages of documentation and approvals prior to commencing construction in 2018 on this facility for Queensland Health.

The U-shaped single storey building has car parking and landscaped outdoor areas surrounding it. The interior is organised in to four zones namely: main entry with foyer, family room, discussion room and amenities; shared residential areas including a kitchen, laundry, dining, activities, lounge and adjacent decks and a secluded sitting room; private residential areas with 7 ensuited studio bedrooms in one wing and another three including special bariatric and parent use rooms in another wing closer to staff.

Lastly there are staff and support areas incorporating a staff room with kitchenette, meeting room, staff bed, PWD amenities, a meds room, office, store room and open place workstations, reception and small utilities spaces. To address building code and client requirements, the design includes a range of different door, ceiling and partition types to address different fire rating, acoustics, security and impact resistance requirements and special fittings to ensure the facility is tailored to the special needs of the people that stay there.
