Spectacular views of the Mackay Regional Sports Precinct as Paynters continue to make terrific progress on site! June and July have seen the successful completion of many key milestones, with our Mackay Project team well on track for completion in early 2019.

Paynters Senior Project Manager, Joe Watkins, has provided a detailed update of the site works.

The bulk earth works for the aquatic and track and field areas were completed allowing site wide in ground services to commence. A complex element of these services is the detailed survey recording of ALL in ground services that will (on completion), be remodelled to provide the Council with a 100% accurate as constructed survey model.

The work on the track is coming along well, with our team ensuring the stringent international standards are met. While this has been underway the playfield has been shaped to profile, the irrigation and subsoil drainage has been installed and the base playing medium imported.

The three pool structural concrete shells are completed and 2 have been successfully water tested, drained and are now ready for tiling. The largest pool (the 50m international standard) is currently been filled for the water test. The associated in ground pipe work to the poles is very close to completion, with pool plant and equipment starting to arrive on site. The concourse area around the pools is partially back filled and will now allow the footings that support the roofs over the Learn to Swim (LTS) and 25-meter pool to be installed.

The associated buildings are progressing well with the all concrete slabs and block work completed on 3 of the 5 areas, Block work on the main entry building is the focal point of the aquatic area and is a detailed arrangement of honed coloured block work. The timber roof frame on the buildings is following the completion of the blockwork and work on the fascia and roof sheeting is due to comments shortly. Off-site the structural steel roof frames over the LTS and 25-meter pools are well in to fabrication with an expected start on installation in August.

When completed, The Precinct (located at the CQ University campus at Ooralea), will include;
– 50m, 10-lane heated competition pool;
– Synthetic athletics track, with field event areas and an internal sports field;
– 25m, six-lane heated lap pool with hard shade cover;
– 15m heated learn-to-swim pool;
– Athletics building, storage shed and change facilities to both aquatics and athletics precincts.

Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting project!
