Welcome to the Whitsunday Coast Airport! Where you’ll be greeted by a 10-metre mini aquarium and a 3D augmented reality screen. The completed project sees the terminal double its size, future proofing the ability to handle the ever-increasing influx of tourists.

We sat down with Project Manager Paul Goldsack to discuss the recent additions & spoke about why the project works were inevitable.

“In order to cater for the growth within the region and create future opportunities for the airport, it was imperative that the Whitsunday Coast Airport deliver this piece of infrastructure to the region.” said Mr Goldsack.

“The newly expanded terminal will allow the airport to cope with three simultaneously arriving and departing aircrafts.” “We have more than doubled the size of both the baggage claim area and the departure lounge, as well as increased the terminals ground crews and baggage handlings facilities, allowing a faster and more streamlined passenger experience.” “In addition to this, the project has also incorporated an additional security screening line, which has also been built to allow for a new body scanning device required by the latest Federal Government security standards”. Paul Goldsack said.

“The project was an exciting and challenging project to deliver” Paul mentioned. “Dealing with the complexities of working in a live aviation environment, managing stringent security requirements all while broken down into complex managed stages. Whilst all of these challenges made for a rewarding project, the inclusion of the completed “heart of the reef” aquarium, the centre piece of the facility, was the most rewarding item to complete. This stand out feature captures the regions speciality and an important natural wonder being the Queensland coast lines reef”. Mr Goldsack said.

“The client was extremely impressed with the overall result, commending the entire Paynters team on the quality of the project and the working relationships that were harboured over the course of the works. With the project delivering several challenges around increased scope, the Terminal’s Management and local Whitsunday Regional Council were appreciative of the collaborative management style delivered by the Paynters project team. This collaboration and workability could not have been achieved without though the support offered by the Whitsunday Coast Airport terminal ground team, Management, Whitsunday Regional Council and Ranbury Project Management”
