Paynters was commissioned to construct cyclone shelters in Bowen and Proserpine. The shelters were built to withstand winds of 300km/h, windborne debris and storm surge experienced in category five cyclones. The shelters are to be used as multi-purpose sports and event facilities for local communities as well as providing emergency protection in the event of a cyclone.

Each shelter incorporates all the necessary emergency communications and services including a generator, emergency batteries, storage rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, amenities and water tanks. The facilities also incorporate special provisions for ventilation, lighting, disability access and safe movement.

Paynters aim throughout the construction process was to provide as many benefits to the local region as possible, stimulating the local construction industry by employing local subcontractors and suppliers. Each shelter supported approximately 40 local jobs.
