Working alongside state government officials, Paynters were contracted to produce a multi-million dollar upgrade to the Cairns Convention Centre, ensuring the state of the art facility maintained its competitive edge as an award winning venue. Due to the refurbishment nature of the works, a high level of flexibility was required with a large number of variations and additional work added to the scope.

These changes were managed and successfully completed within the contract time frame, a credit to our outstanding project team. The upgrades to the centre included a new arrival zone, upgrades of solar hot water panels, lifts, air-conditioning and car parking as well as a two stage roof replacement. Among the scope of work is the Convention Centre’s revamped exterior. The 20 year old building underwent a colour change to display an updated and contemporary appearance, preserving the integrity of the building well into the future.

The project compiled a unique roof design, with Paynters working alongside industry expert roofing contractors to ensure the isolated roof flashing details associated with the complex design replicated the client’s vision. In the initial scope, a substantial degree of the external work was to be completed through the use of steel and aluminium scaffold. This approach was improved by the Project Manager through the use of 20 boom lifts, 2 in which were the biggest in the state. These machines were transported to Cairns specifically for the use on this project, and were fundamental in the timely completion of the project.
