The Mareeba State School project involved the design and construction of a brand-new Prep (Junior) Learning Building. Built within an existing school while it remained operational, the facility included six new classrooms, an under croft play area, outdoor learning area, covered walkways and the construction of external stairs to the existing sports oval.

At project award, the Paynters Far North Queensland team worked closely with the Department of Education and nominated consultants, proposing a number of cost saving initiatives for the construction works. Paynters proposed the use of rendered blockwork for all balustrades in lieu of galvanised steel – providing a significant cost saving for the clients in the post tender period. The thickness of the main building slab was also lessened by adopting thicker concrete beams. This allowed for a larger span, which in turn resulted in considerable cost savings and accelerated construction timeframes.

The Paynters team successfully overcame the challenges associated with delivering works on a fully occupied school site, coupled with the unpredictable climate of Far North Queensland. The impeccable leadership by Paynters’s Project Manager and Site Manager, ensured logistical challenges were overcome, and most importantly, the project ran to schedule. The end result speaks for itself – an eye catching and sophisticated learning facility for the Mareeba School Community to enjoy.
