The Amberley RAAF Base’s fire training centre is the only air force firefighting school in Australia. Withstanding extreme conditions throughout its constant training program, the centre was in need of total refurbishment. Sandblasting was required to strip back both the fuel spill area and the mock 737 prior to repainting. The use of extreme heat to sandblast meant close monitoring of safety procedures was at all times required as well as managing the time spent under such intense working environments.

All the old rusted and damaged components were removed from the fuel spill area and new gas fittings and pipelines were replaced and installed as well as much of the existing steel. The old water deluge systems were dismantled for both the fuel spill area and the mock 737 and new systems were fitted ensuring all safety requirements were fully met.

Paynters managed the tight time-frames of all works including the refurbishment of the two storey mock warehouse and reconfigure of the control room computers, to ensure that no training schedules were interrupted. The refurbishment will see the fire training site endure its severe conditions for at least another five years.
